vocab note:

Let’s Learn Swedish: Time pt. 3

en sekund - a second

sextio sekundar - sixty seconds

en minut - a minute

sextio minuter - seventy minutes

en timme - an hour

tjugofyra timmar - twenty four hours

en dag - a day

sju dagar - seven days

en vecka - a week

fyra veckor - four weeks

en månad - a month

tolv månader - twelve months

en år - a year

Let’s Learn Swedish: Numbers pt. 2

elva - eleven

tolv - twelve

tretton - thirteen

fyrton - fourteen

femton - fifteen

sexton - sixteen

sjutton - seventeen

artton - eighteen

nittion -nineteen

As you see for twenty and thirty, to make thirty two, three, four, you just do

trettio + number (without spaces)

this goes for all of them, but you do not pronounce the -o in trettioen, etc.

ALSO, ALL En’s can be Ett’s if what they refer to is neuter

Let’s Learn Swedish: Hen

Just FYI, i’ve taught you guys han and hon, the male and female pronoun, but the Swedish LGBT community decided to create a gender-neutral pronoun, Hen

Originally Det was used to describe someone without being gender-specific but this made many upset because Det is used to describe something inanimate or inhuman. So the pronoun Hen has been created to show gender-neutrality while still referring to a person.

Hen - Subjective/Nominative form

Hens - Possession/Genitive form

Henom - Objective/Accusative form

sorry for lack of lessons, APs are upon us and I will not have much time till June to get lessons out again but just a quick note.

I did a lesson quickly on the genitive case for Swedish, where you really just add an “-s” to a word

a good way to remember the possessive pronoun Hans/Hennes, it’s just

Han (subjective form/Nominative) + -s = hans (his)

Henne (objective form/Accusative) + -s = Hennes, Her/Hers

and I hope I don’t confuse anyone with the way I describe words now

I felt like, to describe a word and how it’s used, I find it easiest to explain it like I learned it in Latin, using the noun cases and verb tenses. But of course not everyone takes latin so I decided that when explaining if a form of the word is used as the subject, in Swedish it’s called the Subjective form. In Latin, it’s the nominative case.

So you will me see me do what i’m doing above to explain what I mean. I hope this doesn’t confuse anyone. and if anyone has any questions, PLEASE ASK ME! D:

I will also tag all “important”/non-lesson posts as Letslearnswedish

and all lessons as Swedish lessons

Let’s Learn Swedish: Hans/Hennes vs. Sin

In swedish, words and their pronouns agree to a strict point.. Try to follow. I’ve dreaded this one a bit

Hans - his

Hennes - hers

Deras - theirs

Henrik har en bok - Henrik has a book

Marcus läser hans bok - Marcus is reading his book (“hans, his” referring to Henrik’s book)

Just like in the verb Har på mig - Wear, there is a pronoun that must agree with the subject. The reason why is because Har på mig translates to Have on me (or you or him)

jag har på mig en rock - I have on me a coat or I’m wearing a coat

Du har på dig en skjorta - You have on you a shirt or You’re wearing a shirt

Similarly, when referring to a possession of your own or in 3rd person, that person’s own, you use min, din, or sin

jag läser min bok - I’m reading my book

Han äter sitt äpple - he is eating his (own) apple

Han äter hans äpple - He is eating his apple (referring to someone else, to whom the apple belongs)

Let’s Learn Swedish: Genitives!

Who does not love Genitives?!

Swedish still clings to a few cases that need to be declined

This will be a quick list of things to do and not do with the Genitive case (Possession)

2 ways to do a possessive statement

  • Sweden’s king
  • the king of Sweden

both are the same, but made in a different way.

In Swedish, adding an -s to the end of a word makes it possessive as an -’s does in english. Sooo..

  • Sveriges kung
  • Kungen på Sverige

however the more common way is the -s ending.

IF the name or word ends with an -s, you do not add another one, you just add an -’ to the end.

Det här är Nils’ hus - This is Nils’ house

Det här är Sarahs hus - This is Sarah’s house

Another genitive use is to use the preposition Av, though this denotes a sense of origin or creation

ringen är av guld - the ring is (made) of gold

School is coming to a close and finals will be coming up.

there will be very few updates BUT once the year ends there will be many more
